Stoic Practice: The Character Audit

Stoic Practice: The Character Audit

December 13, 2025

This practice is tied to Wednesday’s article: Death, and talking to girls

This week we talked about buying and selling character. Every choice is a transaction. You’re either spending on comfort or investing in who you’re becoming.

Most of us sleepwalk through these transactions. We don’t notice what we’re buying until we’ve accumulated a life we didn’t choose.

The Practice: Daily Character Audit (5 minutes, evening)

At the end of each day, answer these three questions in writing:

1. What did I buy today?

Review your day. Identify one moment where you made a choice, any choice. What did you get from it?

Examples:

  • I stayed quiet in the meeting. I bought comfort, avoided looking stupid.

  • I went to the gym when I didn’t feel like it. I bought discipline.

  • I scrolled instead of working. I bought distraction, avoided the hard thing.

Be honest. No judgment yet, just recognition.

2. What did it cost me?

Every purchase has a price. The comfort you bought, what did you trade for it?

  • Staying quiet cost me the chance to contribute, maybe to be wrong and learn.

  • The gym cost me an hour, I could have rested.

  • Scrolling cost me momentum on my project.

Again, just notice.

3. Was it worth it?

Now judge. Knowing what you bought and what it cost, would you make the same trade again?

This is where character gets built. Not at the moment

, too fast, too automatic, but in reflection. You start to see your patterns. You start to catch yourself mid-transaction.

Why This Works

The Stoics understood that character is forged through repetition. You don’t become courageous by one brave act. You become courageous by choosing courage over comfort, again and again, until it’s who you are.

But you can’t change what you don’t see.

This audit makes the invisible visible. After a week, you’ll notice what you habitually buy. After a month, you’ll start making different trades in real time.

The Advanced Version

Once the evening audit becomes habit, add a morning question:

What character do I want to buy today?

Pick one. Just one trait you want to practice: courage, patience, discipline, honesty. Then look for opportunities to purchase it.

The girl at the bar, the hard conversation with a client, the workout you want to skip, these aren’t obstacles. They’re storefronts. The question is whether you’re going to walk in and buy something valuable, or shuffle past toward something cheap.

Remember

You will lose everything external eventually. Money, status, health, relationships, all of it is on loan. The only thing you get to keep is who you became along the way.

Buy well.

Until next time,

Ricardo
