Stop wishing for the future, live immediately

“Real generosity towards the future lies in giving all to the present.”
― Albert Camus

I’ll do it tomorrow, and tomorrow never comes.

I have to say, even though I might sound like a total braggart,  I have an incredibly high BW-photo-of-Neptune_1ac75e47f865c5d5d5d7448d621589b1expectancy of “future me”. In my head “I know” that future me will be wiser, he will be the good man Marcus Aurelius talks about, oh! he will have so many great qualities!, that I’m excited!

I just have to wait for future me to come and save the day.

…………………………………………………………………………………………

Time passes and future me never arrives. All the problems he was going to take care of are piling up and, slowly, I’ve come to understand the painful truth that he never will come and realizing this, I actually start feeling embarrassed for leaving all that work to him, just being a good man takes an incredible lot of time and effort. I guess I’ll have to start working myself.

Maybe the great man, the good man, is not him ……….. but me.

I can certainly say that this is not uncommon.

We live day by day thinking that our problems will be magically solved by our future selves in the future, we do this every time we eat junk food, every time we leave the work that could be done today for tomorrow.

And we are all guilty about this.

Talk about stupid behaviors. The future is not going to get any better if you don’t do anything about it right now. Your future self will not be smarter, wiser and braver if you do not take those qualities right now and start practicing.

No one is going to come and save the day but your current self, as in, right now. Realize this and you’ll find power, it’s on you, it’s your responsibility and no one else’s to be a good man, to be great at living, to actually start living.

“Often a very old man has no other proof of his long life than his age.”
― Lucius Annaeus Seneca,
